Welcome to the Disley & Lyme Horticultural Society Website. Here you can find out everything you need to know about our society and see what exciting events we have planned for the year ahead. Please take some time to navigate around the site and feel free to contact us if you have any questions or need help and advise.

The 2011 show is now done and dusted. Another year and another success. The show was visited by hundreds of people as usual and a good time was had by all. A show report will be available online as soon as i receive one.

Committee News

At the 2010 AGM Brian Ibbotson stepped down from the role of Show Secretary for the good of his heath. We would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to Brian for many years of dedicated show planning and look forward to working with him in his new role of Publicity Officer. We would however advise that Brian is not leaving the committee as he’s taking up the role of publicity officer. Dean Stafford had stepped up to the show challenge and accepted the role of Show Secretary.

Topical Tips – Your winter project

When it’s wet and cold outside maybe inside we can start to plan this year’s garden! While away an hour or two looking at seed catalogues, maybe websites, and make a list of all the plants and vegetables you would like to grow, note how big they will grow, how much sunlight they need and the soil they prefer.

– Weed & PEST Control

A reminder for summer, kill dandelions by sprinkling half a teaspoon of salt into the middle of the rosette. This kills the root as well as the top growth.

To control aphids, soak 8oz of young nettles in a bucket of water for a week, strain and spray on undiluted.

Future Newsletters

If you can accept emailed newsletters but have not told us please send your email address to les.matthews@dewconstruction.co.uk. If you have already done this and you have not received this newsletter by email our apologies but for some reason your email will have been returned to sender. Have you changed your email address and forgotten to tell us?  Perhaps we have recorded it incorrectly. Whatever the reason please let us know and hopefully your next newsletter will be emailed to you. This reduces our costs and helps us maintain the society subscriptions at such a nominal level.

As you will all know, Brookside Nursery has been taken over in the past 12 Months. Very generously the new owners will be offering a 10% Discount on plants to Members. Only on production of a valid membership card. We would like to extend our thanks to the new owners.

Subcriptions are now due and once again we are planning to hold the subscriptions at only £3, which is simply incredible value for money in anyone’s book, particularly in these money crunching times.

You can pay your subscriptions at any of our events or contact Mary Milburn, our Membership Secretary. Mary will send out reminders to those errant folk who have not renewed by early spring but postage eats away at our funds so please avoid this necessity.
